Persian wedding in Spain
Last September 20th, we had the privilege of experiencing something we’ll never forget. We traveled with our cameras, as we have so often, ready to tell a love story.
But this time, the story took us to Hacienda Buena Vista, in Riotinto (Huelva), a place that seems created to celebrate life: rolling hills, open skies, and an energy that invites you to dream.
The couple, of Persian descent but raised in North America, chose this corner of southern Spain to unite their lives. And they did so surrounded by a very special group of guests: select people with refined tastes from all corners of the world—New York, Iran, India, Kenya—all gathered in a cosmopolitan yet deeply human atmosphere of celebration.
The charm of a Persian ceremony
One of the most moving moments was the traditional Persian ceremony, known as Sofreh Aghd. Before a mirror and two lit candlesticks—symbols of light and eternity—the bride and groom gazed into each other’s reflection, promising to always be together in the future. On the ceremonial table, sacred objects evoked prosperity, sweetness, and unity: nuts, honey, bread, pomegranates—small gestures steeped in centuries of tradition. As photographers, we were fascinated by the visual and spiritual richness of this ritual, where every detail deserves to be captured.
Andalusia and Persia at the same table
If anything defines a wedding, it’s the way the food is shared. And here the fusion was delicious: Iberian ham from the Huelva mountains, aromatic couscous, spiced rice with orange, and roasted lamb lovingly prepared by an Argentine couple who contributed not only their culinary expertise but also their humanity.
El concepto de la cena nos sorprendió: nada de camareros recorriendo las mesas, sino una gran mesa central en la que los invitados elegían libremente qué y cuánto servirse. Una forma distinta, cercana y muy participativa, que rompía con la solemnidad para dar paso a la convivencia.
Dance, flamenco and shared joy
After a poolside cocktail, a flamenco group filled the hacienda with rhythm. The dancers didn’t just dance: they invited the guests to join in with rumbas and sevillanas. And what can we say about that guest who, with surprising Spanish, launched into some near-perfect sevillanas? It was one of those moments when borders are erased and we all feel part of the same thing.
The groom’s father also made his mark, offering a performance on his wind instrument that led to a dance where no one sat still. And, as the icing on the cake, the cake ceremony: a saber was passed from hand to hand among those closest to the wedding cake until the final cut. A solemn and festive gesture, full of symbolism and unity.
What we carry in our hearts
As photographers, we often talk about light, framing, and moments. But there are days when words fall short, and what we’re left with is pure emotion. This Persian wedding in Huelva was just that: a celebration where different cultures intertwined naturally, where Andalusian art mingled with Persian traditions, and where the bride and groom and guests reminded us that the true beauty of a wedding lies in sharing, in experiencing, in dancing together until the end.
